How to help your child speak English at home (ages 3-6)

By BrightAIBee · Updated 23 Oct 2026 · 4 min read

Many parents want their children to be comfortable in English before school, even when English is not the language spoken at home. You do not need to be perfect. A few daily habits, done calmly and with a lot of encouragement, help a 3 to 6 year old build vocabulary and confidence.

1. Read picture books aloud every day

Ten minutes a day matters more than a long weekly session. Point at the pictures, say the word, and let your child repeat. Read-aloud books with a clear voice model good pronunciation. In English books for kids, a voice reads each page aloud so your child hears the words as they see the pictures.

2. Start with first words

Everyday words come first: fruits, animals, family, colours and numbers. My First Words and Colours and Number Words cover these with pictures.

3. Move to short sentences

When single words are easy, try "I see a cat" or "The ball is red". My First Sentences builds this step by step.

4. Use rhymes and opposites

Rhymes teach sounds and rhythm. Opposites (big and small, hot and cold) make words easier to remember. Try Rhyme Time and Opposites.

5. Listen to stories

Listening to short stories builds vocabulary without any effort. Our read-aloud stories are told in simple English for ages 2 to 6, with moving pictures to show what the words mean.

6. Speak a little, often

Choose one routine, such as breakfast or bath, and name things in English. Keep it playful, and never correct harshly. Repeat the right version back: "Yes, that is a big red ball."
